The Role of A Nurse at Camp Laurel...
Camp Laurel employs eight nurses. We have a well-equipped, modern health center and offer our campers first-rate medical care. The Health Center is under the direction of our Pediatrician of 20 years and our Head Nurse.
Camp nursing consists mostly of TLC, routine child illnesses (URI, strep throat, colds, etc.) and administration of medication for such illnesses. The Health Center is a busy place and hums with activity - children requiring allergy shots, throat lozenges, band-aids, antibiotics and the like.
Our campers are, by and large, very healthy children with few, if any, serious medical conditions. They are used to "immediate" and constant attention at home and we practice the same service at camp.
Occasionally, nurses are called on to administer first-aid in an emergency situation (sprained finger or ankle, hyper-ventilation, etc) and we are fully equipped to deal with these and other trauma situations. In addition, a fine hospital is located 20 minutes from camp and we have an excellent 911 Rescue Squad only 3 miles from camp.
Being a camp nurse is a great job if you love kids and enjoy the outdoors. There is ample opportunity (after the first two weeks and the "getting to know" process) for swimming, sailing, tennis, relaxing, evening volleyball games, etc. You will meet campers from all over the U.S. and Canada as well as 275 staff members ranging in age from 20 - 60. We are proud to say, almost half our staff return each year.
Being a camp nurse is not for everyone. It requires a lot of patience, understanding, compassion and the ability to handle routine child illness with a smile. The hours are long, but working with normal, healthy children is usually a good break from an ER or doctor's office.
